Monday Lunch Live with Dr Glenn Begley
“10% of the time it works every time”: breaking the stranglehold of journal impact factors to achieve real-life impact
As scientists and physicians, we all want to have an impact and help improve the lives of patients but sometimes we let another kind of impact factor hinder our progress. Perverse scientific incentives drive our academic system and allow us to tolerate the sloppy, lazy, science that we see every week in the so-called “top tier” journals. Dr Glenn Begley will ask is a highly-citied paper always a high-quality paper and shouldn’t we be focused on real-life impact factors?
Dr Glenn Begley trained in Melbourne, as a clinical haematologist/oncologist and completed his PhD at WEHI. Glenn has spent the last 15 years working in the USA working and consulting for biopharma in both start-up and large company environments. He has recently returned to Australia as CEO of another start-up, BioCurate, a new collaboration between Monash and Melbourne Universities.
