Development of cancer nursing research capability has the potential to enhance patient care, health outcomes and health services.
Nurses are essential to the cancer workforce
Nurses form the largest component of the health workforce in metropolitan, regional and rural areas.
A knowledgeable, research-enabled and research-active nursing workforce is fundamental to quality, safety and innovation in cancer care.
Areas of impact can include:
- Access to and equity of treatment and care
- Symptom and side-effect management
- Efficient and patient-centred models of care
- Post-treatment care
Developing cancer nursing research capability
The VCCC has invested $1 million to develop cancer nursing research capability across the clinical partner organisations.
Professor Meinir Krishnasamy is Chair of Cancer Nursing at the University of Melbourne and VCCC Research & Education Lead, Cancer Nursing, she is also the program champion for the VCCC Nurse-led Research Program, providing strategic direction and coordination.
The key element of growing research capability is centred around a Nurse-led Research Hub (the Hub). The Hub is a new practical, interactive and dynamic initiative that supports connections, research knowledge and opportunities for nurses across the clinical partners of the VCCC alliance.
Research, network, enable and establish
The Hub uses multiple strategies and activities to support nurses to engage in research, such as:
- Online information-sharing forum
- Free education sessions and workshops
- Supported research secondment opportunities
- Training and mentoring
- Access to seed funding for research projects
- Promotion and profiles of nurse-led research
